Kevin Van Geem developed a love of bioethics while studying pre-medical science at Columbia University. As he earned his masters degree in bioethics, Kevin decided to change his career path from physician to policy maker in an attempt to improve the health of the worst-off in our society. He was inspired to do this by the institutional ordeals during the birth of his son, the writings of Michael Sandel, and Ronald Dworkin, and the work Thomas Frieden did to stem tuberculosis in New York City and India. Kevin is currently finishing his thesis on unrepresented patients, and hopes to begin his doctoral studies in health policy and ethics in the fall of 2016. His primary areas of interest are social determinants of health, HIV/AIDS, mental and emotional health, and the barriers to effective communication between patients and providers.
